Silent Insight Meditation retreats at beautiful Anglin Lake, with Jeanne Corrigal

Near to Nature’s Heart, August 4-7, 2022
This immersion in kindness with the community of land, lake, sky, and trees cultivates our sense of care for ourselves and all beings, and supports liberation into the spacious, loving, connected heart and mind. This retreat is inspired by the teachings of both Elder Jim Settee and the Buddha.

Touching the Earth Insight Retreat, August 7-10, 2022
On the eve of his enlightenment the Buddha touched the earth and asked for help to awaken. On this retreat we will touch the beloved earth with our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits, as we follow the Buddha’s guidance in cultivating liberation of the heart-mind. This retreat invites us to renew our connection with the nourishing well of our true nature, for the sake of all beings.

These retreats include dharma talks, practice talks with Jeanne, reflective meditation practices, and gentle paddling each day. For more information, please email the Saskatoon Insight Meditation Community at contact@saskatooninsight.com.

As of May 26, 2022
Near to Nature’s Heart is FULL.
Touching the Earth Insight Retreat is FULL.
We will take names on a waitlist if the retreats fill.

Save the dates for 2023: Aug 10-13, and Aug 13-16

Retreat requirements

To support the safety and practical aspects of this nature retreat, we ask that participants have:

  • A minimum of one weekend retreat.
  • Familiarity with Insight Meditation practice.
  • Good swimming and basic canoe skills.
  • Basic camping experience.

Retreat Etiquette

We will share the happiness of the community work meditations of on-site food preparation and clean up.

This retreat will be held in silence, except for safety and logistical needs, and for practice talks with Jeanne. Please be prepared to turn your cell phone off for the duration of the retreat to support your capacity to be present with nature. This supports the whole community. An emergency number will be provided for you to give to family or friends in case they need to contact you.

Please come prepared to participate fully in the retreat schedule:
Day 1: 3:45 pm to 9 pm
Days 2-3: 6 am to 9 pm
Day 4: 6 am to noon

Logistics

  • You can register for one or both retreats. There is a maximum limit of 15 people per retreat.
  • Cost for each trip: $200, plus a food contribution equaling about $50. When you register, you will be invited to choose which food items you would like to contribute from our potluck list. A provincial park pass is also required.
    • Some scholarship support is available, if the registration fee is a barrier.
  • If you are able to bring a canoe, the cost is reduced ($105 per canoe).
A maximum of six canoes are needed for each retreat, depending on number of people registered.
  • Registration fees cover the operational expenses of the retreat (equipment, fees, transportation, etc.). They do not cover the teachings, which are freely given because they are considered priceless. Dana is a Pali word meaning generosity. In keeping with Buddhist tradition, teachers do not charge for their services but are sustained by the generosity of their students. Dana allows the teacher and retreat manager to continue their Dharma work. There will be an opportunity to offer dana to Jeanne for her teaching.
  • We set up our home at the Spruce River Campground and paddle from there. Bring your camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc.). This unserviced campground has outhouses. We will set up a common kitchen area for meals.
  • Protocols to safely offer this retreat in light of Covid will be determined closer to the event.

Susie Harrington teaches meditation nationwide and is the guiding teacher for Desert Dharma, which serves many communities in the Southwest near her home in Moab, Utah. She has trained in the Insight tradition since 1989, and in 2005 was invited into teaching by Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, and Guy Armstrong. She has also received teachings from many others, including Tory Capron, Adyashanti, and Tsoknyi Rinpoche. She often offers retreats outside, believing nature to be a profound teacher, and a gateway to our true self. Her teaching is deeply grounded in the body and often emphasizes the expression of mindfulness in speech and daily life. Susie brings the skills of inquiry, relational dharma, and the psychological/spiritual interface to her teaching, informed by her ongoing study of the Diamond Approach by A.H.Almaas and as a graduate of Hakomi Therapy (a somatic psychotherapy modality). She offers a two-year intensive program, Dharma in Daily Life, where she delights in mentoring the innate qualities of heart and wisdom in everyday practice. Her practice is rooted in periods of long retreat both indoors and outdoors, which offer nourishment and inspiration for her teaching. She was an outdoor professional for over 30 years, including years as a river guide, mountaineering guide, and backcountry ranger, and now finds her greatest delight in sharing her love of the dharma and the natural world.

Some words about the practice of dana

We often have queries about what might be an appropriate range for any financial dana offering to the teachers, that you might wish to make. Before we consider this, it is really important to know that the teaching of dana is a liberation teaching, because it is an intentional opportunity to practice generosity, which can directly erode the habit in the mind of grasping. The Buddha invites us to tune into the joy of dana, the joy of giving, before, during and after… so please, see this as a joy and liberation practice!

One of the gifts of dana is that it is optional, and if people decide to give in this way, they can give according to their means. And at the same time, asking about a range is a reasonable question… in Asia, folks often have an idea of how much is needed to support a teacher’s “requisites”, but in the west, we don’t have the same kind of guidelines, and folks in the west can be left a little bit out at sea in this area.

Offering guidance can be sensitive, as everyone’s circumstances are different. That said, in order to support the teachings, we offer these guidelines as a place to start, and those who wish to give in this way can move up or down on the scale, according to their means.

One guideline is to give the amount that brings you joy, knowing that your dana is supporting the Dharma to carry on (while being aware of not breaking the bank 🙂). One may also seek guidance by looking at the fees that are charged for similar events of workshops in our culture. Movies now cost $15 or more; yoga classes often $15/hour; in addition, workshop leaders are often compensated in recognition of the time it takes to prepare materials, the presentation, as well as their expertise.

Perhaps a helpful starting point for our sessions would be $25 – $35 per class. (This would be a range of something like $200 – $280 for the course). Please feel free to offer less than this in order to ensure your participation, knowing that your presence and any financial contribution are valued. Please feel free to offer more, if you are able, and it brings you joy to support others and the program in this precious way. Feel free to offer monthly or once or twice during the course – whatever works for you. And, please know that we are very grateful for both the dana of your presence in the program, and your financial dana; both danas contribute to our capacity to continue teaching. You can feel that your support is supporting the Dharma. Thank you.

If you wish to offer your generosity to support Jeanne, Andrea, and our community, please visit our dana page to find details.

Cancelled: Awakening Together: Nurturing Beloved Community

We are disappointed to let you know that we have cancelled the daylong with Devin Berry and Jeanne Corrigal – the registration was a bit low. Devin is going to visit our sangha on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, so we invite you all to join us then. Also, to celebrate Beloved Community with us, you are welcome to come to one of our drop in Community Circles too!

Our next online retreat, with our beloved Susie Harrington, is Feb 11 – 13 – let’s gather then!

In this daylong we will call on our ancestors, including Martin Luther King, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Cree Elder Jim Settee, to support us in building connection and allyship in today’s world.

Practical, daily applications of ancient teachings will guide us in connecting through our diverse identities and experiences, into ways we can stand strongly and kindly together, in these times.

Registrants in this daylong will be invited to upload a photo (optional) of a biological, spiritual, or nature ancestor, for sharing in a community ceremony on Saturday afternoon. We will also have a special community reading of our sangha intention poem.

In the spirit of community and deepening practice, Devin and Jeanne both wish to connect with those who want to, in group practice talks. The schedule will allow some opportunity for this.
